Overview
The Chief Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering division at Residence Inn San Jose South. In the absence of the Director, the assistant will assume the administrative, financial, and operational aspects related to engineering.
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and implementing plans to maintain property, equipment, grounds, and other assets in a safe and acceptable state of repair.
- Ensure the hotel complies with all local, state, and federal laws.
- Supervise and train all Engineering staff in Customer Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures, and Loss Prevention.
- Create and post all Engineering staff schedules.
- Develop and adhere to the annual department budget.
- Participate in developing financial forecasts and monthly profit/loss reviews.
- Implement preventative maintenance programs for all hotel equipment.
- Ensure all emergency and life safety equipment and systems are inspected, tested, and certified per standards.
- Participate in energy conservation programs.
- Review guest and meeting planner comment cards to identify and correct issues promptly.
- Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Assist in administering vendor contracts controlled by the engineering department.
- Handle room maintenance requests promptly and courteously.
- Respond immediately to alarms to determine cause, assess emergency status, and report findings.
- Assist with special projects and renovations as needed.
- Support and participate in all hotel programs and safety committees.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or related field; or a 2-year college degree with 1 year of management experience.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Stationary Engineer’s license if mandated by local code.
- Skills in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance required.
- Ability to work long hours sometimes.
- Physical ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and 50 pounds frequently; up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Maintain a warm, friendly demeanor at all times.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with all staff and guests.
- Ability to listen, understand, and clarify concerns.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines.
- Attentive, courteous, and service-oriented approach in all interactions.
- Attend all required meetings and trainings.
- Participate in Manager on Duty (MOD) coverage as needed.
- Maintain regular attendance and high standards of personal appearance and grooming.
- Comply with hotel standards and regulations to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Identify problem areas, implement solutions, and handle problems proactively.
- Ability to understand and evaluate complex information from various sources.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
